I’m chair of our faculty union delegates assembly, and have been involved with conversations around what to do if ICE shows up for several months. We requested, and received, instructions from the university general counsel that was helpful but remains incomplete. In particular and related to the scenario you describe is that while we can block agents from entering our private space (which includes classroom) we lack clarity on where the boundaries are between private and public. Rooms vs hallways? Inside versus outside? What about courses with outdoor components? Sand then there are the (unionized) staff from all across the globe.

We have asked for details on the public v private space, but I really like the idea of using our alert system. We already get alerts not only for threats on campus but also for dangerous situations in town.

Kidnappings should qualify!

Thank you for starting this conversation. I like the idea of using an alert system especially given the fact these systems SHOULD be used when people are being kidnapped in a dangerous manner into unmarked vehicles by unidentified people. Another idea I have is that we should offer more online options so that students who need to can still learn and pursue their studies from safer locations. We did it to protect from a deadly virus. We can do it to protect people, who are often minors, from being kidnapped and tortured. We shouldn’t have to be having this conversation yet here we are.
