Coming from a Southern Land Grant, it is our connection to agriculture and forestry though extension that has been our saving grace. I have seen research stations slotted for closure only to have commodity groups rally to their aid and reinvigorate investment by the state and university. Our only hires at the moment are tied to industry requests for specialists. This is a relationship that cannot be taken for granted, and it puts a lot of pressure on us to be engaged, relevant, and available.

I work with some plant pathogists and breeders. It is kinda frightening to hear about the challenges they are tackling to keep us eating.
